Perry, the donkey who inspired Shrek’s, is dead: “He suffered a lot”

Perry had inspired the talkative character of Donkey or Jo (Donkey in the original version) in the animated film series Shrek. Sick and after a long fight, the animal was euthanized and died on January 2, 2020.25, reports the site Palo Alto Online.

The 30-year-old little donkey was also the official mascot of Palo Alto, California, United States. “He was a beloved member of our community and we know many people will be touched by his death,” the city wildlife park, where he had resided since 1997, wrote on Instagram.

“He took a lot of painkillers”

According to Palo Alto OnlineJenny Kiratli, the donkey’s caretaker, said Perry suffered from laminitis, a hoof disease that caused him excruciating pain.

He obviously suffered a lot. He took a lot of painkillers. And we had caregivers there all day, watching him and hoping that something would improve.

The animal died peacefully after being euthanized, according to the caregiver.

Donkey voiced by Eddie Murphy

Perry was chosen by the writers at Dreamworks. The animators used him as a model to create the Donkey in the film.

The character in the animated saga is dubbed in the original version by Eddie Murphy, and in French by Med Hondo (French voice of the American actor), who died in 2019.

Shrek was released in 2001, then Shrek 2 in 2004, Shrek the third in 2007 and finally Shrek 4: Once Upon an End in 2010. The Green Ogre, Fiona and Donkey will be in a 5th film, which could be released in 2025.
