Belgium was singled out by the Attorney General of Switzerland, Stefan Blättler, during an interview with the newspapers Matin Dimanche and the SonntagsZeitung. He was concerned about the rise of terrorism in Belgium and the increase in organized crime. Swiss justice has never handled so many procedures linked to terrorism, this is “a historic record”, according to Stefan Blättler.
But the latter also fears the rise of organized crime in Switzerland. “It is unacceptable that rival organized crime gangs are fighting each other in the street,” said the attorney general, who insisted that local authorities must put in place measures to combat this. He then pointed the finger at the Belgian situation and the shootings which followed one another within the drug scene in Brussels in 2024: “I don’t like to say this, but we must ensure that we do not have a conditions like those of the suburbs in Belgium or Sweden, where the traces of gang crime are now clearly visible, with shootings, dozens of deaths and racketeering.
