“Fighting your inner wolf”: Little Red Riding Hood revisited by Les Marionettes d’Angoulême

While she goes to her “grandma”, fearful because the latter is very demanding of her, the little girl learns to face her “inner wolf”. “It represents the little voice in his head. Intrusive thoughts that push her to do stupid things,” explains Claire Gabriel, production administrator of the company.

Fight your inner wolf

The staging combines a puppet show and drawings projected and animated live on a white frame, using an overhead projector. All brought to life thanks to three actresses accustomed to the Pocket Theater: Manon Ducrot, Inès De Domahidy and Chloé Bolzinger. The drawings were made by Sophie Zorilla and Eric Welch, two artists from Angoumois.

Large pointed ears, long teeth and imposing eyes: on the projected images, the big bad guy is well represented as a canine. Her puppet is made of a large, fluffy black sheet, like a shadow that weighs on the heroine. A wolf that she must understand in order to grow up and gain confidence. It’s his life, as well as that of his grandmother, that is at stake.

A show for the whole family

At the beginning of 2024, Tom Lucazeau, the company’s sound and image engineer, dissatisfied with a previous version performed by the Angoulême puppets in 2019, decided to restart the story. He keeps the idea of staging, with the live cartoon projection, but starts everything else from scratch. In less than a year, his work was completed.
