The Hôtel de Caumont in Aix-en-Provence presents an exhibition dedicated to Niki de Saint Phalle, focusing on her fascination with fantastical creatures.
It will undoubtedly be one of the summer exhibitions in 2025 in the south of France. From April 30 to October 5, the Caumont hotel in Aix-en-Provence will honor the artist Niki de Saint Phalle, recently showing in cinemas with a biopic by Céline Sallette.
Born in 1930, died in 2022, the Franco-American visual artist is one of the great heroines of the artistic scene of the second half of the 20th century. Popularized by the busty shapes of her Nanas, she has developed a singular and colorful, feminist and liberated universe. Supported by the Niki Charitable Art Foundation, the Provencal presentation will be particularly focused on Niki de Saint Phalle’s fascination with animals and monstrous creatures, which is found in particular in his Tarot Garden, in Italy, between symbolism, mythology, autobiographic stories. , surrealist heritage.
The exhibition will be curated by Lucia Pesapane, art historian, specialist in the work of Niki de Saint Phalle. She notably signed the major retrospective of the artist in 2014 at the Grand Palais in Paris, more recently the exhibition dedicated to him in 2022 at the Abattoirs in Toulouse as well as the current exhibition at the Museo delle culture in Milan.
