The Danish royal family shares their Christmas reunion with Queen Margrethe at Marselisborg Castle

For Christmas, Queen Margrethe is surrounded by her eldest son's family this year. The former sovereign meets King Frederik X, Queen Mary, as well as their children, at Marselisborg Castle. It's time for reunions, a few hours before Christmas Eve, particularly for Crown Prince Christian who has just concluded his three and a half month trip to Africa.

Queen Margrethe brings her eldest son's family together in Aarhus for Christmas

Queen Margrethe of Denmark, 84, has just had an exceptional year. In her New Year's speech, delivered almost a year ago, she announced her intention to abdicate in the days to come. On January 14, 2024, she put her wish into practice, handing over her throne to her son Frederik. For the new King Frederik X and his wife Mary, it was a year 2024 full of new responsibilities.

King Frederik Queen Margrethe has just had a year with a much lighter schedule. Having ascended the throne in 1972, she had not experienced such a year of rest for 52 years. Despite the reduction in her official schedule, the former sovereign still carries out public engagements and engages in numerous activities, mainly artistic and creative, such as making theater costumes.

King Frederik X spends his first Christmas as King

This Monday, December 23, the Royal Household shared photos of the reunion of the royal family in front of the entrance to Marselisborg Castle. This castle is located in Aarhus, the country's second city, and was built between 1899 and 1902 as a wedding gift for the future King Christian Easter and Christmas.

The four children of King Frederik X are very close to their grandmother and will have time to catch up. Crown Prince Christian, 19, will have a lot to tell Queen Margrethe, having just returned from Africa. The heir to the throne has just spent three and a half months in Africa to gain a special experience before beginning his military service in a few weeks. Her younger sister, Princess Isabella, 17, 2nd in line to the throne, is finishing secondary school. Finally, 13-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine are now real teenagers.

Queen Margrethe usually spends the Christmas holidays with the home of one of her two sons. She then often spends New Year's Eve with her sisters. This year, it's Frederik's turn to keep him company for his first Christmas as King. His second son, Prince Joachim, celebrates Christmas in , with his wife's family with their two children. Joachim's first two sons spend the holidays with their mother's family.
