The affair has shaken the country for a week. Yang Tengbo arrived in the United Kingdom from China in 2002. After completing his qualifications and then setting up businesses, notably a consultancy firm, he obtained an unlimited residence permit in 2013. He also describes the United Kingdom as his “second home”.
Last year, at the instigation of the domestic intelligence service, MI5, he was prevented from entering British soil. He is suspected of being a spy. The authorities are relying on exchanges and documents found in his phone which show proximity to the Chinese government, to the Communist Party and to an influence agency which serves the interests of Beijing.
This stay ban has since been confirmed by the courts. Yang Tengbo says he is innocent, completely unrelated to everything he is accused of.
Prince Andrew, brother of King Charles III, finds himself in this story because he knew and frequented the man who is today suspected of being the eye of Beijing. And even more, if we rely on a letter from Andrew's main advisor. It says that “Mr. Yang can act on behalf of the prince” with potential investors interested in Chinese markets. The kind of documents that open a lot of doors in the UK.
The king's brother specifies that he ceased all contact with Yang Tengbo as soon as he was informed of the suspicions surrounding him. He also says they never talked about any “sensitive” subject. Too late: he is a little more marginalized, to the point that he will not participate in the royal family's Christmas in Sandringham Palace.
Andrew is already hated in the country for his involvement in the Epstein affair: accused of sexual assault on a minor, he avoided a trial in the United States after a financial arrangement with the complainant. The Queen, his mother, had also helped pay the bill. He has since lost all his military titles and is no longer an active member of the family.
