Tonight on : it's one of the biggest hits of all time and its beauty leaves you speechless every time: Cinema and series

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on . Tonight: this film is a revolution in special effects.

After thirteen years of development, the highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster Avatar has finally been released in theaters. On December 14, 2022, two years ago, millions flocked to theaters to watch the continuation of the adventures of Jake Sully and his family.

Avatar: The Way of Water takes place more than a decade after the events recounted in the first film. We find Jake (Sam Worthington), Ney'tiri (Zoe Saldana) and their children facing new challenges.

Actively sought after by humans, they are forced to leave their home and explore the various still very mysterious regions of Pandora. To protect his people, Jake Sully will have to wage a difficult war against his external threats.

The cast includes Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Joel David Moore, as well as new faces well known to the general public, such as Kate Winslet and Cliff Curtis.

Never before seen in cinema

With 14 million admissions in and 2.24 billion worldwide revenues, Avatar 2 has successfully succeeded in its mission: to rank third among the most important successes in history, even surpassing Titanic (first place being occupied by Avatar 1 and the second by Avengers Endgame).

In addition to having exploded the box office, Avatar, the Way of Water received the Oscar as well as the BAFTA Awards for Best Visual Effects. It must be said that the film's special effects are astonishing, thanks to the immense technical advances made since the release of the first film in 2009.

Indeed, if James Cameron waited so long before releasing this second part, it is because he absolutely wanted to wait for the invention of new software allowing him to create the special effects he imagined.

The director notably managed to shoot underwater scenes in performance capture: “It took us a year and a half to understand how to manage, that pushed us to go further, to innovate, to use our imagination and ultimately to create a new technology […] It’s never been done before.”

And the good news is that we're not done being amazed. Indeed, three other sequels are already in development, with a release date of 2031 for Avatar 5. Photos of new landscapes of Pandora have even been revealed… and it promises to amaze us for many more years. years !
