Juliette Binoche, Annie Ernaux, Charles Berling… 50 personalities demand the pantheonization of George Sand

She lent him her features. His bright smile and his bright laugh. Her tears. Twenty-five years ago, Juliette Binoche became, during a film by Diane Kurys, children of the centuryGeorge Sand. On the screen: the whirlwind of an intense affair with Alfred de Musset, the passion between two artists of genius, rebels, thrown headlong into a story as sublime as it is devastating about which the lovers wrote. Confessions of a child of the century (1836) for Musset. She and him (1859) for George Sand.

After lending her voice, her face, her silhouette, Juliette Binoche became the ambassador of the request for pantheonization of the writer initiated by the former administrator of the Nohant estate, Georges Buisson. Already supported in view of the bicentenary of his birth in 2004, declared “George Sand year” by the Ministry of Culture, this request, brought this time within the framework of the hundred and fiftieth anniversary, in 2026, of the disappearance of George Sand, and by cenotaph containing a little Nohant earth, has already received the support of many elected officials from Berry. In their letters addressed to the Head of State, who decides on pantheonizations, all praised “the tireless fighter for the Republic that she very early called for”.

“In these times when the Republic is bruised, the national recognition of the author ofIndiana would serve as a reminder of the fight that must be waged every day in favor of democracy and the republican political regime. To pantheonize George Sand is to reaffirm this universal emancipation of Man in a new social contract where the right to think, speak, or write is guaranteed,” wrote the DVG mayor of , Yann Galut.

The second stage of this long process, the additional impetus, is the support committee, of which we now know the first fifty signatories. Fifty names. Fifty votes. Convinced that “her revolt is at the origin of our century”, as she indicated in her address to the President of the Republic, overwhelmed by “the exceptional strength” of George Sand, Juliette Binoche took the head of this first list of personalities from all backgrounds, sharing the concern to see an artist and her struggles recognized by the Nation.

“This tribute would salute the legitimacy of her republican commitment, her career, her choices, and the place she occupied throughout the 19th century in and beyond. Above all, it would recognize her unfailing political and social commitment to democracy, universal suffrage, the emancipation of women and the improvement of the human condition, as well as her ecological, pioneering and visionary fight,” underlines the Oscar-winning actress. And to continue: “The one who never stopped claiming her thirst for freedom to write, to take a stand, for the right to simply be herself, an actress in her own life, must finally be honored by our Republic. »
