Eight years after the film’s release ArrivalDenis Villeneuve reconnected with Amy Adams during a meeting organized by the magazine Vanity Fair.
In the video of the interview posted Tuesday on YouTube, the Quebec filmmaker and the American actress notably returned to their experience of working together during the filming of Arrivalin the summer of 2015, in Quebec.
Amy Adams plays the lead role in this science fiction film which garnered 8 Oscar nominations in 2017.
“From my first meeting with you, I liked your energy and your honesty,” confided the 50-year-old actress, speaking to Denis Villeneuve.
“You were very open and vulnerable and I immediately felt safe with you. I knew I needed that feeling of security to make this film,” she added.
Amy Adams continued to praise the Quebec filmmaker later in the discussion, particularly praising the relationship of trust and honesty that he establishes with his actors and technicians on his film sets.
“People like working with you because you have so much respect for the actors,” said Amy Adams in Villeneuve. It’s really nice to work with you. (…).
“The way you create an environment of mutual respect between everyone who works on your set is a truly rare talent. You manage to make everyone feel involved in the project. I always felt that we were all building something together. And for me, it’s something unique and very different from other films I’ve worked on.”
The director of Dune et Blade Runner 2049 said for his part that he was seduced by Amy Adams’ “quiet strength” and “desire for authenticity” during his first meetings with her.
“I immediately felt that we were walking in the same direction and that you were the best ally I could have to make this film,” Villeneuve revealed to the actress.
At the end of the interview, the two former accomplices laughingly recalled the memory of a karaoke evening during which Denis Villeneuve apparently performed the song Heavy rain.
“Since tonight I can no longer hear Heavy rain the same way!,” joked Amy Adams.
