The Ministries of Agriculture and the Environment announced on Monday their objective of reducing waste in food companies by 60% between the year 2000 and the year 2030.

The “unspoken rule of one third” was one of the causes of food waste in the retail sector. Indeed, the practice was for deliveries to be refused by traders if a third of the time separating the production date from the expiry date had passed. For example, when a food product had a shelf life of six months, the manufacturer had to have delivered the product within two months of production.

The government intends to push companies to make more of an effort so that they change this habit and relax delivery requests.

The fight against waste is one of the objectives of the Sustainable Development Program adopted in 2015, the signatory countries have set themselves the objective of halving waste by 2030, among retailers and consumers.
