For several days, in the heart of the Bourse, an immersive exhibition around Snow White has been present. The non-profit organization La Compagnie des Rêveurs offers the general public the opportunity to discover the historical origins of the Brothers Grimm tale: the life of Margaretha von Waldeck.
In the 16th century, the young Margaretha von Waldeck suffered a tragic fate. The daughter of a wealthy family, she lost her mother at a very young age. The von Waldecks owned mines in which they exploited children. This situation was changed by the Brothers Grimm: the children were replaced by dwarves, happy to go to work. Around 16, Margaretha was sent to the Brussels court of Mary of Hungary. There she met the son of Charles V, Crown Prince Philippe. Only, he is Catholic and she is Protestant. Their union is impossible. At the same time, Margaretha’s health was rapidly declining and the possibility of poisoning was seriously considered. She died in 1554 at the age of 21. Today, she would be buried under the Stock Exchange, where a church was located at the time.
Through “The legend of Snow White”, “The legend of Snow White”, the non-profit association La Compagnie des Rêveurs wanted to pay homage to this historical personality and above all to highlight the parallel with Snow White by the Brothers Grimm that we know. An immersive exhibition which aims to make culture accessible to everyone. The profits will subsequently be donated to cultural solidarity projects and projects for children placed in care.
