Silvan Carrère, journalist committed to Occitan culture and language.
Silvan Carrère, today channel director of Ràdio Païs, developed a passion for journalism and Occitan culture very early on. After starting his career as a journalist in the local press in Gers, Bigorre and Béarn, Silvan clicked during a college internship in an associative radio station, where he discovered a world that fascinated him. It was then that he decided to continue on this path and became actively involved in Occitan culture. He becomes a member of the association We from Bigòrrawhere he participates in collections to preserve the memory and traditions of Béarn. This immersion in the Occitan world encouraged him to learn the language and defend its transmission in the media. In 2024, Silvan carries these values within Ràdio Païs, a radio station that he considers to be an essential player for the territory with the Occitan language and culture as its leitmotif.
Radio País, a link to the territory
Founded in 1983 in Béarn, Ràdio Païs is part of the free radio movement of the 1980s. Broadcast in Béarn, Bigorre and Gers, it offers a common program for the first two regions, with a local dropout specific to Gers since 2013. This approach allows us to better respond to local cultural and linguistic realities.
Ràdio Païs is an associative radio station under the 1901 law, run by a team of professionals – journalists and technicians holding press cards – and volunteers. It is managed by the federation LIVING IN THE COUNTRY Ràdio Paíscreated in 1996, which brings together several associations, including Radio País Bigòrra, Radio País Gèrs and Eths Amics de Rádio País en Comenge. The objective of this federation is to promote the Occitan language and culture, while ensuring a public broadcasting service in Occitan.
Ràdio Païs stands out for its bilingual programming, favoring Occitan Gascon, but also including other Occitan variants such as Languedoc, Provençal and Limousin. Radio plays a key role in promoting the Occitan language and culture but also its territory and its inhabitants, while serving as a relay for minority cultures through its musical programming. Today, it is a structured and professionalized regional media, with seven employees and 52 volunteers.
