“Exiles. Artists’ Views”, the new exhibition at the Louvre

The Louvre differently

What does exile do to creation? What form does creation give it? Does exile make creation different, singular? Many artists have experienced exile, for a time or for life. There are many artistic and literary figures who embody this departure towards somewhere else.

The exhibition questions the links between creation and feeling of exile. In a journey that evokes exiles in their diversity, she places this issue in the long term of history and the history of art. Based on the great myths and founding stories, this project adopts a multidisciplinary vision, both real and sensitive, based on the way in which artistic expressions reveal and illustrate the human experience of exile. The exhibition crosses eras and geographies, also giving a large part to the contemporary creation.

Homer, Ovid, Jacques Louis David, Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Victor Hugo, Gustave Courbet, Marc Chagall, Nil Yalter, Kimsooja, Yan Pei-Ming, Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, Barthélémy Toguo and Marco Godinho… the artists question the departure, displacement, the complexity of arrival, uprooting, but also the decisive role of meeting and welcoming.

Rich in nearly 200 worksthe exhibition is intended as a manifestation sensiblehighlighting artistic, pictorial, sculpted, photographed, filmed, literary, poetic, philosophical creation, and creating bridges between ancient art and art of our time.
