The second film by Emmanuel Courcol : “A Triumph” (2021) showed us how much this filmmaker knew how to examine the human condition as closely as possible. His new and third opus confirms the virtuoso attention he pays to the twists and turns of society. A heartbreakingly emotional dramatic comedy.

A transplant that changes everything

Thibaut is a conductor classic known and adored throughout the world. At the height of his glory, he suffered from leukemia. The only solution is a transplant. You still have to find a compatible donor. Shock, his sister is not! After much analysis and cross-checking, Thibaut discovers that he is an adopted child.

He also learns that he has a brother. Having gone looking for him, he found him in a small town in the North of . Jimmy works in a school canteen and spends his free time playing the trombone. The two forty-year-olds get to know each other and since Jimmy has a good heart, he donates his marrow to him. The operation is a success. Thibaut is in remission. During this time the two brothers grew closer. Jimmy plays in a marching band that must participate in a competition. But now their leader is transferred far from this city. Thibaut will convince Jimmy that he can replace him. He will even help her.

Emmanuel Courcol here paints the portrait of two men shaped by their environment but both passionate about music. Jimmy has absolute pitch. Nobody told him. He makes him want to change his life.

Benjamin Lavernhe in full light

Avoiding all the clichés that this kind of encounter can presuppose, the director focuses instead on breaking down the boundaries between two repertoires: classical, that of symphony orchestras, and popular, rather linked to brass bands. This fiction is carried by two outstanding actors. One is a resident of the Comédie Française. It is Benjamin Lavernhe, of whom it is useless to specify how his Thibaut seems to have always led orchestras. His looks, his silences, his slightest movements mark a performer of great talent.

At his side, an actor who will soon take on major leading roles: Pierre Lottin. We’ve been following his rise for a while. Each of his appearances confirms an incredible presence and charisma. A true chameleon, he stands out as much in the Tuches than in other jobs that are singularly more complex. Jimmy’s is one of them, all angry and with a thirst for success which will suddenly give him wings. A major duo for a film about brotherly bonds that is ultimately moving…

Robert PÉNAVAYRE

With fanfare, a film by Emmanuel Courcol.
