Russell Crowe invites the public to discover this American comedy headlined by Ryan Gosling. Unloved at the time of its release, the star actor of the first Gladiator film assures him: this film is not so bad since it manages, “with lightness, to pivot between drama, romance and comedy”.
A good comedy
Released in 2024, The Fall Guy is a production by David Leitch, known for his action films like John Wick, Atomic Blonde et Bullet Train. The film stars Ryan Gosling (La La Land), Emily Blunt (Without a sound), et Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass). Produced by Universal Pictures, it was inspired by the 1980s television series with a budget estimated between 125 and 150 million dollars. Unfortunately, the film only grossed 181.1 million at the worldwide box office, failing commercially. It did not win any major awards but was praised for its visual qualities and spectacular stunts. In a tweet, the actor who plays Maximus in Gladiator (2000) recommends:
Have you seen The Fall Guy? It’s really funny. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt work well together, with lightness, (the film, editor’s note) goes from drama to romance to comedy and vice versa. It’s worth a look.
Ordinary heroes
Colt Seavers, experienced stuntman, leads a dangerous life between explosions and chases. After an accident that nearly cost him his career, he is hired to find a missing star. This mission draws him into a complex plot and forces him to face deadly challenges on the movie sets. At the same time, Colt seeks to win back Jody, his ex-girlfriend turned director, while navigating a world where the life of a stuntman is constantly in danger.
With a score of 81% on RottenTomatoes (press score), The Fall Guy received a good critical reception. Variety described the film as “an ode to Hollywood stuntmen that has humor and heart.” The Hollywood Reporter even called it “a love letter to cinema’s unsung heroes.” However, ScreenRant noted a “lack of narrative depth, although the performance remains impressive.” This mix of action and comedy was mostly appreciated for its performances and stunts, not its plot. If you want to check out The Fall Guy, it is available for rental on Amazon Prime Video and Canal+.
