The portrait of Abbé Pierre erased from a fresco in

The representation of Abbé Pierre on the Fresque des Lyonnais, a famous painted wall in , has been definitively erased, noted Friday November 29, 2024, a journalist from theAgence Press (AFP). At the bottom of the fresco, his full-length portrait has been covered by a perfect trompe-l’oeil. The decorative elements have been repainted, revealing a simple staircase behind a wide entrance.

In Lyon, this fresco is a trompe-l’oeil painted on a building representing famous, historical and contemporary Lyonnais.

Many routes renamed

The fate of the portrait of Henri Grouès, known as Abbot Pierre, a former icon of the fight against poor housing born in Lyon, was in suspense after the revelations of sexual assault targeting the religious.

At the end of September, the word “rapist” was sprayed in large letters on the portrait of the founder of Emmaus, with red paint blocking his eyes. Everything was quickly covered with a large square of gray paint, a decision taken by the CitéCréation cooperative (owner of the fresco), in agreement with the Lyon town hall. In France, many roads or places named after Abbé Pierre have been renamed since the revelations of sexual assault.
