Gabriel Fauré (the Requiem), Georges Bizet (the Te Deum) and Frédéric Chopin (piano concerto No. 1): the next Saint-Léonard master’s concert will be dedicated to French music, this Sunday, December 1 in Fougères (Ille-et-Vilaine).

We will celebrate the hundredth anniversary of Gabriel Fauré’s death by performing his Requiem, his only religious work, composed when he was twenty years old.

Alain Chérel, the musical director of the master’s degree.

The master’s choristers and instrumentalists will welcome for the concert five soloists : tenor François Amuzara, baritone Ronan Nédelec, sopranos Maryvonne Michel-Besnard and Marie-Pierre Peloil, and pianist Marina Belogorodseva-Fiérain.

This will play Chopin’s piano concerto number 1 (1810-1849), created in 1830. A concerto where the orchestra seems to be in the background: “Chopin never expressed himself better than through his instrument,” notes the master.

From Bizet (1838-1875), we will hear the God bless you (1857). The composer’s only work of religious music, created when he was only twenty years old.

The master will perform another religious piece, the Requiem by Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924). “This mass for the deceased is considered one of Fauré’s masterpieces and one of the most beautiful requiems of the 19th century,” appreciates Alain Chérel, the musical director of the master’s degree. The version that will be played is the version for choir, orchestra and organ (two soloists, baritone and soprano).
