“This is one of the first human sketches made by the artist, whose vigorous outline and shaded areas show the beginnings of a cubist deconstruction of the human silhouette, characteristic of his other sketches of the era”, presents Henri Godts, specialist at the Arenberg house.
The other drawing, made in pencil, represents a woman seated on a balustraded chair, “a recurring element typical of Magritte’s works”, notes Arenberg Auctions.
These drawings, authenticated by the Magritte Committee, will go under the hammer on December 12. Their starting price is estimated at at least 3,000 euros.
Last week, a version of Magritte’s painting “The Empire of Lights” was sold at auction in New York for a record $121,160,000 (€114 million).
