After directing the three Spider-Man films for Marvel Studios, Jon Watts left the clutches of Kevin Feige to partner with Apple on the production of an original work. However, it could be that the filmmaker did not particularly appreciate the collaboration…
Ocean’s Fourteen
Broadcast on September 27, 2024 via the Apple TV+ streaming service, Wolfs is the latest film from Jon Watts, director best known for directing the final trilogy of films Spider-Man as of date. Featuring two fixers who find themselves having to cooperate against their will after finding themselves assigned to the same mission, the film quickly highlighted in its marketing campaign the presence of George Clooney and Brad Pitt in the role of the two characters sharing the poster.
In fact, the two actors had not filmed together in such a way since Ocean’s Thirteen by Steven Soderbergh in 2007 (if you except the Burn After Reading by the Coen brothers, in which the two actors only interact very furtively). At any rate, Wolfs enjoyed a decent to mixed reception upon its release, Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 66% positive review scoreand the question of a possible sequel naturally arose. Unfortunately, it seems that the American filmmaker did not take too much time to decide on the future of this sequel.

On a crusade against streaming
Indeed, if rumors of the cancellation of a sequel have been circulating for several days, Jon Watts recently revealed to Deadline the reasons for this cancellation. Namely that if Apple had initially committed to releasing Wolfs in theaters, the American company finally reversed its decision by favoring a streaming release accompanied by a limited release on American territory.
The change from a theatrical release to a streaming release (…) was made without explanations or discussions. I was only informed a week before the announcement. It completely stunned me and I asked them not to mention that I was writing a sequel. They ignored my request and still announced it in their press release (…). The truth is that Apple has not canceled the sequel Wolfsthat’s me, because I no longer trusted them as partners.
An understandable decision on the part of the filmmaker, especially since we see more and more American directors and actors standing up against the abandonment of theaters in favor of streaming platforms. Filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan, Doug Liman and even Scarlett Johansson have previously openly expressed their disagreement with their producers or broadcasters favoring the release of their works via streaming rather than in theaters. So, if streaming platforms are gaining more and more space in the cinema industry, it seems that theaters still have filmmakers on their side to defend the existence of the classic movie theater.
