In Aix, the bastide town of Jas de Bouffan, the Lauves workshop and Bibémus revisited for the Cezanne year

The Jas de Bouffan bastide, bought by the City of Aix in 2018, the Lauves workshop, occupied between 1902 and 1906, and the Bibémus quarries, a motif dear to the man considered the father of modern art : three emblematic and heritage places that Aix will highlight on the occasion of this Cezanne year. “He is truly an Aixois and the City of Aix is proud to put him back on stage“, says Marie-Pierre Sicard-Desnuelle, deputy mayor responsible for heritage and museums.

In the bastide, the City of Aix had the pleasant surprise of unearthing the remains of one of Cezanne’s first works, a port entrance subsequently covered by another mural, The game of hide and seek according to Lancret. It will be the highlight of a visit which will allow you to see the restored bastide, at the level of the large living room, with a scenography designed for “show behind the scenes of art“, says mayor Sophie Joissains, but also the kitchen, the bedroom decorated on the theme of “Léda and the Swan”, and the painter’s studio on the second floor.

The Orangery will also be transformed into a tea room. But everything will not be completed by the time of opening next June. The future reception building, on the south side of the bastide where the BRT passes, will not be ready. Entrance to the house grounds will be via a temporary building. And the site should close to the public after the exhibition, next October, to continue the work during the winter period.
