“Congratulations dad, your album Drinking Songs has just passed a million views on YouTube!” It was thanks to this message sent by his son, while he was having a good time in Greece between two concerts in 2018, that Matt Elliott learned that he had suddenly exploded the streaming numbers. A surprise, given that the Franco-English musician’s long format had remained relatively confidential since its release in 2004, and his minimalist laments rarely served as a soundtrack to party halls.
“I took a double blow that evening. First of all, I didn’t know that my son was following my career like that, even though I never raised my children in that way. As for the listening figures, it was just an algorithm that put the album forward, I don’t even know why. Drinking Songs surfed on this for months and months, without any other form of promotion. I won the algorithm lottery, that’s all,” he smiles at this mention.
