It’s a holiday awaited by millions of Americans: Thanksgiving. Since 1941, this holiday is officially celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, with traditions anchored in most American homes, such as the famous turkey. Americans, who go together with their families, eat 40 million during this period. Record crowds are also expected at stations, airports and on the roads.
Thanksgiving is also a public holiday in the United States, with parades all over the country. The most famous is in New York for the Macy’s parade, the department store with its inflatable creatures that almost touch the buildings. Philadelphia or even Chicago, almost every major American city organizes a Thanksgiving parade.
In this episode of A Letter from America, an RTL podcast, Arnaud Tousch, correspondent for RTL and M6 in the United States, tells us the history of Thanksgiving, from its creation to today. How does this party generate billions of dollars in sales? And to what extent the big parades have become highly regarded institutions in the country?
