The pop icon always thought her first name was Cherilyn.

When her mother, Georgia Holt, gave birth to her in 1946, a nurse came into her room and asked what she planned to name her baby.

“My mom said, ‘Well, Lana Turner is my favorite actress and her little girl’s name is Cheryl. My mom’s name is Lynda, so why not Cherilyn?'” Cher wrote in her autobiography.

When the Grammy Award winner decided to change her legal name to Cher in the late 1970s, she pulled out her birth certificate. “I was shocked to discover that I was officially registered as Cheryl,” she continues in her memoir. “I asked my mother, ‘Do you even know what my real name is, Mom?'”

Her mother, who was 19 when she gave birth to her, responded: “I was just a teenager, and I was in a lot of pain. Let me go a little!”
