This November 24, Turkey pays tribute to its teachers on the occasion of Teachers’ Day (Öğretmenler Günü). This special day highlights the essential role of teachers in the training of future generations and the development of the country.
Origin of the celebration
Established in 1981 for the centenary of the birth of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Turkish Republic, the date of November 24 was not chosen at random. It commemorates the day in 1928 when Atatürk was proclaimed “Başöğretmen” (Senior Teacher) after introducing the Latin alphabet, marking a major reform of the Turkish education system.
A day of tribute and gratitude
During this day, students express their gratitude to their teachers by giving them flowers, cards, poems or by organizing special activities. Schools across the country hold ceremonies, performances and events to celebrate the dedication of teachers.
A strong symbol for education
Teachers’ Day highlights the importance given to education in Türkiye and the deep respect for those who transmit knowledge. It is an opportunity for society to reflect on the crucial role of teachers not only in academic instruction, but also in shaping the values and character of younger generations.
