VIDEO – The mayor of Béziers told RTL that he fought with his brother because he was so drunk. He also admitted to pretending to drink for a long time.
This Thursday, Robert Menard went to RTL to discuss, in particular, the anger of farmers including wine growers. Thomas Sotto took the opportunity to start the conversation about wine. And for good reason, the 2024 vintage of Beaujolais Nouveau falls on November 21. To the host's question “Are you Team Beaujolais Nouveau?”Jean-Michel Aphatie then did not hesitate to denounce the “marketing operations around alcohol”. “When we know the devastation that alcohol wreaks on a society: road accidents, family problems”listed the journalist.
A subject which particularly affects Robert Ménard and which made him uncomfortable. “I am very embarrassed to answer you because […] I don't drink winesaid the mayor of Béziers. Partly for reasons that are very personal. You don't know what it's like to have an alcoholic in your family. You can't imagine the devastation it wreaks. I don't want to talk about it there.”he added, specifying that he had “drank a little alcohol when [il avait] 20 ans ».

A surprising revelation which touched Jean-Michel Aphatie while the two men recently spoke out at the same microphones. Far from having finished and probably wanting to confide, Robert Ménard continued: “At first I pretended to drink when I was elected. Emmanuelle, my wife, we were together often, I gave her the glass and, after a while, I said to myself: “But shit, they elected me, they like me for who I am, I don’t drink wine” ».

Although he initially did not want to say more about the personal drama linked to alcohol that he experienced, the mayor of Béziers ended up declaring to everyone's surprise: “My brother ruined our life, my mother’s, my father’s, mine. I fought with my brother because he was so drunk. His wife committed suicide. We can't imagine what a tragedy it is.”.
Not wanting to be intransigent, Robert Ménard wanted to clarify: “I'm not saying all this to say that you shouldn't drink wine, you should drink it sensibly. But I have experienced so much of that…”. And to conclude: “Guys who drink, who think they're funny because they've been drinking… So girls… I'm the old man on this, it bugs me even more. Guys who drink too much don't make me laugh. But; at the same time, I defend the winegrowers”.
