Film screenings, activities and workshops in class, or outside, with students around the theme “Weaving tomorrow”. This is the program for Migrant’Scène, until December 8, 2024and proposed by the Cimadea national association of active solidarity with exiled people.
In a press release sent to the press on November 14, the Ornaise branch of the RN protested against this festival, which it did not name. The far-right party indicates that Cimade, described as a pro-migrant association, is organizing “a vast propaganda operation particularly aimed at high school students from Alençon (M. de Navarre high school) and Mortagne-au-Perche (Lycée Jean Monnet). »
Gérard Vienne, candidate for the last legislative elections in the 2nd constituency of Orne, recalls in this press release the charter of secularism in schools, its duty of neutrality, and takes the opportunity to attack national education.
The school’s mission is above all to educate students and transmit knowledge.
“A propaganda operation”
This is precisely what Ludovic Cervera, the new principal of the Jean Monnet high school in Mortagne-au-Perche, believes he is doing. “Migrant’Scène has existed in the establishment for many years without there having ever been the slightest problem,” he is surprised.
This Tuesday, November 19, 2024, students in the professional section and those who are registered in the Visual Arts option will go to the Ciné Lumière to watch the film Abou The King. A documentary by Ariane Doublet, present on site, which retraces the journey of Abou, a young Guinean who arrives alone in Le Havre and launches him into a professional sewing course.

“Addressing the issue of migration does not mean advocating migrants. We have a completely secular vision of things. We must allow students to have a critical look at the world. » Ludovic Cervera indicates that this project is carried out in conjunction with the plastic arts teacher, as is the case in other establishments in Orne. A debate also takes place after the screening, at the Mortagne-au-Perche cinema.
Addressing the question of migration makes it possible to retrace life paths and to work on complementary notions of geography. Migration is a reality. And above all, it is part of moral and civic education.
A festival present since 2008
This controversy sparked by the National Rally is all the more surprising given that this festival has existed since 2008 in France, and at least 10 years in Orne. Contacted, Cimade does not wish to comment on this RN press release. She simply explains that the festival is currently taking place under the best auspices, with many people at the screenings.
The objective of promoting an inclusive society, talking about social justice and respect for all. With the high schools with which we are partners, we sometimes work with artists to raise awareness, debate, and build links for tomorrow.
Content validated by the Academy
The RN, which also denounces the public subsidies captured by Cimade, indicates that it will contact the prefect, the mayors, and the director of academic services of the Department (Daesen). However, it is indeed national education which gives approval to Cimade to carry out these interventions in class, after having analyzed the content (read box).
“Everything but propaganda”
Contacted, Jean-Luc Legrand, the Daesen of Orne, confirms that Cimade does have approval to work with schools. But in Mortagne-au-Perche, Cimade will not go into classes. A debate is only planned after the screening of the film, in the presence of the director. “The film is broadcast on France Télévision. It is part of a program financed by the Normandy Region in particular, and France 3. A project sheet is carried out with the teachers. It’s not something above ground. Anyone can watch the film and realize that it is anything but propaganda. It’s so transparent that it’s on television, it’s to say…” comments Jean-Luc Legrand.
This attack on a festival anchored for 10 years in the territory, occurs less than a year and a half before the municipal elections, where the RN hopes to conquer several municipalities in Orne. A timing that is undoubtedly not trivial.
