“It’s all false” Actress Sydney Sweeney throws a wrench into the pond, her latest statement further damages Hollywood’s image…

Aaaaah, Hollywood. Since the new Hollywood, driven by the influence of the New Wave, appeared, American cinema has been at the heart of many stories and fantasies. Rising star, Sydney Sweeney proves once again that public perception can be truncated by the image given through communication.

Hollywood: unhealthy competition and lots of fantasies?

Some careers explode quite suddenly, through the series of broadcasts of successful productions. In the profession since he was 12 years old, Sydney Sweeney is now a young international star and therefore gives many interviewswhether in a promotional context or not. Aware of her own image, she had, as Première recalls, made a mocking opening speech against the image of her that was conveyed. Cinema being what it is, we are often entitled to numerous anecdotes, indiscretions and secrets filming. However, it also generates a lot of fantasies around intentions and gives birth to real urban legends.

It’s not always easy to navigate, especially when agents, producers and studios maintain the myth or block communication. For several years now, it has been flourishing within the industry itself that actresses, producers, directors or technicians would show absolute solidarity in an industry largely controlled by men. This particularly echoes the Harvey Wenstein cases, at the center of terrible sex trafficking a few years ago. In her recent portrait by Vanity Fair, Sydney Sweeney shot down the idea of feminine solidarity and sincere feminism:

It hurts so much when we see women putting other women down. Especially when they are successful in an area of this industry and they see new talents arriving, who work hard to get there, and who hope to succeed in their dream, whatever it may be. Seeing these women trying to discredit them, to minimize their work, is ugly. Throughout the industry we hear, “Women helping other women gain power,” but there is no such thing. Everything is false, everyone talks behind everyone’s back.

An image difficult to control

It also evokes the social construction which spreads the idea that a single woman, a sort of chosen one, could occupy the “throne”, and that all the others would only try to take the place. In response to this she said tries to behave as best as possible but finds that she is constantly “attacked”. Necessarily, this raises the question of image. Vanity Fair therefore asked her what preconceived ideas the public might have about her.

Finally amused, she simply replied that there would be enough to fill an entire article. As for the subject of rumors, she took as an example Everything But You, a film in which she plays alongside Glen Powel. Very quickly, the public imagined that the actors were in a romantic relationship, which is not true. Sydney Sweeney first indicated that she loved the fact that the success came from the public, especially through word of mouth. She then returned to the fact that once the film was on the radar, a lot of questions revolved around his duo.

(…) When this film was successful, a lot of questions from the press were about Glen and me. I don’t know if we really planned to promote the film like that, if we had a strategy. I would rather say that we were asked very specific questions, and you know that when you answer ‘no’ to a question, people think that you are a bitch, so… (…) Unfortunately , I don’t control my image: in fact, it’s in your hands, guys. (…)

Finally, the 27-year-old actress took on her second hat, that of producer. At first, she explains that she did not want to open up too much and that an image of her was formed in the heads of her peers. Realizing that it could harm her more than anything else, she is very more active in creative meetings. Sydney Sweeney started on television in 2009, but it was from 2019 that her career took off thanks to her role in Once Upon A Time… in Hollywood. Since then, she has been seen in Tout sauf Toi, Madame Web, Immaculée, Everything Sucks!, The Handsmaid’s Tale, Euphoria or even The White Lotus… Soon, we will find her in Echo Valley or even Eden (Ron Howard).
