Invited to Angoulême, specialist Jean Condé dismantles fantasies about artificial intelligence

AI has no direct relationship with notions such as truth, ethics or the values we place on things as humans.

The term AI is omnipresent in the news without us knowing what it is. Could you give a clear definition?

Ask Chat GPT, he will give you the best definitions [rires]. It is a content production tool which is based on probabilistic engines and algorithms. Once we have said that, it sets the framework for what we can obtain from it and what is complicated to expect from it. We must be wary of the production of any AI as long as it is used for purposes that may involve risks for the user.

That’s to say ?

If an AI gives a prediction about the risk of cancer in an image, special attention must be paid to it. AI relies on a sum of probabilities, so there is always a risk of error which is important to consider. AI has no direct relationship with notions such as truth, ethics or the values we place on things as humans. AI views the world only through a pile of data.

Is the entry of artificial intelligence into animation good news or bad news?

It is a state of affairs. But for the moment, it’s complicated to give your opinion on this subject because we don’t know how far AI can go in terms of production capacity. There are start-ups and software publishers who sell us upcoming products which seem to be able to carry out the work of a 2D, 3D animator, designer, graphic designer. In reality, when we look at what it is possible to do today, we are very far from being able to replace an animator with an AI tool. In their speech, publishers have an interest in promising the opposite given that they have raised hundreds of billions of dollars to develop their programs. It is no coincidence that they tell us that we can always go further.

So animation professionals don’t have to worry?

In the short term, there is no major concern. As long as there is a qualitative component and respect for the requirements of the target audience, employment is protected. We will find cases of use on secondary characters, on settings, on very repetitive sequences. The less important the quality of the final rendering, the more the AI will be able to find its way.

In 2023, a comic book drawn entirely by artificial intelligence was published. Is this the beginning of the end for the authors?

No not at all. The AI will be quite creative in a closed circle of ideas but it is structurally incapable of leaving this universe, of emitting a truly new and moving artistic proposal. Quite simply because it is based on what already exists.

Which industry is at risk of losing the most jobs due to AI?

That’s a good question and that’s the whole point of my studies. I can say that it is not entire sectors that will be targeted but rather specific professions, segmented around a well-defined task such as translation. Please note that the translator of literary works is not threatened, but the translator of notices or manuals is.
