Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx will star in a new Netflix comedy in which they play retired CIA parents forced to return to business. The trailer for Back in Action has just been released, and it's (a little too much) everything you could imagine.
In 2022, the return of Cameron Diaz in front of the camera was announced, several years after the actress decided to retire. To this date, she has not actually been seen in a film since 2014 and the musical Annieadapted from the Broadway classic. What is the scenario that could make her come back after a break of more than ten years ?
Answer: a Netflix action comedy with a prophetic title, Back in Actionin which she will opposite Jamie Foxx – her partner in the excellent Sunday Helldirected by Oliver Stone and released in 1999. The actor is far from having taken any form of retirement, since he was still starring in films like God is Bullet, They cloned Tyrone et Death Business in 2023.
The project Back in Action is now more than materialized, since Netflix just released the trailer. And this one is reminiscent of… quite a few other films.
Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx break it all on Netflix
The message of the trailer is clear: Back in Action will revisit the trope of a couple of secret agents who try to reconcile their daily life of heavy-handed interventions and their family lifeafter being brought out of their early retirement.
A postulate which is reminiscent of that of True Liesremake the The Total! by James Cameron in which Arnold Schwarzenegger tried to hide his secret agent job from his wife Jamie Lee Curtisuntil she fell into the business herself.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith is an even more obvious reference, since Doug Liman's film with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt was an action comedy telling the story of a couple whose the man and the woman each concealed their work as a hitman from the other. The concept was also made into a series by Francesca Sloane and Donald Glover for Prime Video in 2024. Hence the pitch feeling a little too familiar.
CAMERON DIAZ BACK IN ACTION
Cameron Diaz had already played a role in a romantic action comedy shortly before her retirement, as she played the apprentice secret agent alongside Tom Cruise in the Night & Day by James Mangold in 2010.
It seems that there is a bit of all that in Back in Actionwhose trailer alternates scenes of fighting and family exchanges tinged with humor in fashion Spy Kids. The comic spring put forward is a priori the look of the children, surprised to discover that their uninteresting parents are actually war machines who do car stunts like barbecues in the garden.
The general tone is therefore the classic American family comedy action versionwhich shouldn't stand out too much in the Netflix catalog. To surround Diaz and Foxx, the casting will count Glenn Close, Kyle Chandler et Andrew Scott.
The film was initially scheduled to be released on the platform on November 15, 2024, but it will ultimately be necessary wait until January 17, 2025 before seeing all these beautiful people on Netflix.
