Pina Bausch, an immense German choreographer who died in 2009, continues to inspire dancers and directors around the world. His pieces have become classics and, a notable element in live performance, today’s spectators can see them again on stages all over the world thanks to the repertoire work carried out by his company, the Tanztheater, in Wuppertal, Germany. Each year seven to eight pieces are replayed identically, like for example the room cloves which is performed in November at the Lille Operawhile the company also offers original creations based on the work of Pina Bausch as Forever – Immersion in Café Müllercreated and presented in Avignon in July 2024 by Boris Chermatz, the new director of the Tanztheater:
“I am for the repertoire, and not only for the repertoire of Pina Bausch, because I also love dancing and working around Isadora Duncan or Steve Paxton. I really like doing contemporary dance, improvising, experimenting, but that history and improvisation, that is to say that creation and heritage go together (…) We work on both memory and immersion with the public and I would say that. “there is both repertoire and then a sort of perspective.”

News of the day
- The figurative painter Frank Auerbach died this Tuesday, November 12 at the age of 93. Known as one of the influential members of the London school alongside Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud, over 70 years he painted numerous landscapes of London in bright colors with tawny tones, but also numerous portraits, with bluish hues, with a melancholy and tortured atmosphere. In 2015, the Tate Britain dedicated a major retrospective to him. In recent years, several of his works have been sold at auction for several million euros.
- In Japan, despite the popularity of manga and anime, the industry is facing a significant labor shortage. Japanese animation studios produce more than 300 films and series each year, a colossal success for a growing industry. However, as revealed an article from the Japanese daily “Asahi Shimbun” taken up by International mail, studios are struggling to recruit animators. This crisis is linked to the frenetic pace of production and poor working conditions (low wages, precarious status) which make the profession unattractive for new generations. The Japanese government has just created a commission responsible for putting in place measures to remedy the causes of this shortage.
- The Booker Prize was awarded this Tuesday, November 12 to the writer Samantha Harvey for his novel Orbital published in France by Flammarion last March. In this fifth book, the British author recounts the day of six astronauts aboard the international space station. Everyone carries out their daily tasks while contemplating the earth, crossed by existential thoughts about their own lives. Created in 1969, the Booker Prize is one of the most prestigious literary prizes in the world, each year rewarding a novel written in the English language. Note that the last woman to win it was Margaret Atwood in 2019.
