Haïdouti Orkestar will be in concert on the stage of the Antichambre in Mordelles (Ille-et-Vilaine), Friday November 15, 2024, as part of the Jazz à l’Ouest festival. Sylvain Dupuis, drummer-percussionist and leader of the group, talks about the origins of the project.
How was Haïdouti Orkestar formed?
The group was born 19 years ago, after meeting Turkish musicians. I wanted to make the link between their traditional music and that of French brass bands. We thus left the world of the Balkan brass band to move towards sung titles, mixing Ottoman, Greek, Syrian, Turkish, Lebanese or Armenian culture…

How many albums have been released?
Five. The latest, Yuh Yuhwas released in 2023. In 2016, we also participated with trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf in the soundtrack of the film The Cowwhich brought Haïdouti Orkestar into another sphere. The tour continues in 2024.
What should the public expect?
On stage, we are nine musicians and a sazist singer. In the group, there are a lot of brass instruments, percussion and an accordion. We play in front of a seated or standing audience, joyful music which can lead to a few dance steps from the spectators, alternating with a fairly nostalgic repertoire. We claim to be a mixed group. We defend this notion of multicultural mixing, which enriches us, while defending the Kurdish or Gypsy minorities.
