Presse Océan: Where did this idea of ​​exhibiting artists come from?

Patrick Garçon: “It all started during the 2020 pandemic. Suddenly, the artists disappeared with the venues closed. At the request of Emmanuel Gaudin, of Scènes Vagabondes, we wanted to take photos of the artists in their place of creation so that they can continue to exist through this gaze. The artistic community is fragile and it was a way to support them. »

How did the artists receive your proposal?

“They were surprised at first but then flattered. It was a time when many felt abandoned and were looking for ways to keep their art alive. We started with a series of 30 portraits where I traveled to meet them. For the photo to be successful, it is important to take the time to understand their world. »

Technically, what are your preferences?

“I use a wide angle which allows me to better encompass the place. Then, I am a fan of black and white. It’s always been my preference. I think that this way we get more to the point. Color can disrupt the message and a color photo goes out of style more quickly. Black and white has more soul and therefore brings out souls better. »

From 30 at the start, there are now 120 portraits?

“The first series was exhibited at the Parc de Procé when the performance halls were still closed. The approach was continued with the idea of ​​bringing the people of Nantes closer to their neighboring artists. We had to run after them a little more because they had resumed their activities! But it was interesting because the artists came with their proposals. »

What do you feel
seeing the photos
thus exposed?

“I really like the exhibition because the entire process was carried out by the City, including the manufacturing of the supports in the workshops. When I see passers-by stopping, I feel great pride. We are planning a book to bring together the photos, so the adventure will continue after the exhibition. »
