This slice of lunar meteorite, weighing approximately 2,005.9 grams and measuring 8 millimeters thick, was discovered in 2019 in the Tisselit Valley, Mali. After its discovery, the meteorite was divided into seven slices by scientists, and this piece is one of them.
It stands out as the second largest slice of polished lunar meteorite in the world. Scientific analysis has confirmed that this lunar meteorite is a breccia, characterized by an assembly of rock fragments, shards of glass and glass spherules from lunar soil near the surface.
This rare fragment, not only because of its weight and size, but also because of its lunar provenance, is of inestimable value to collectors and researchers.
In addition to the lunar meteorite, Christie’s also auctioned a scientific manuscript by Einstein on the first order approximation field equation, as well as a musical manuscript by Mozart on the fourth movement of the Serenade in D major. These historic pieces are accompanied by works by famous artists, including Zao Wou-Ki, Yoshitomo Nara, Yayoi Kusama and Chen Yifei.
The sale offers an exceptional collection, combining science, classical music and contemporary art, thus attracting collectors from various fields.
A recent industry report reveals that Chinese collectors are now the largest group of buyers in the global auction market, surpassing their British counterparts. This rise reflects China’s growing interest in art and collectibles.
Christie’s data further indicates that in the first half of this year, China led the world in terms of the number of new buyers.
