A Quebecer proud to vote for the first woman president: “She is a career woman who has good judgment”

For her first participation in an American election, Annick Nadeau will not fail to vote for the first mixed-race president in the history of the United States.

“I believe Kamala Harris will make a good president of the United States. She is a career woman who has good judgment,” explains the mother of Sofia and Éva, residents of Denver, Colorado, where The Journal joined her.

Even though she has lived for 20 years in the city where the Quebec Nordiques moved, this is the first time that she will have the opportunity to express her right to vote since she obtained American citizenship in November 2020.

Another point unites Annick and Kamala: Montreal. “Even if she doesn’t talk about it often, I believe that the four years that Kamala Harris spent in Montreal allowed her to assimilate Quebec culture and values,” adds the international real estate manager who grew up in the borough of Saint-Laurent.

Born to a Quebecois father married to a Chinese woman, the 49-year-old woman masters Mandarin and Cantonese, in addition to Spanish, English and French. A great traveler, she was hired by Cirque du Soleil when the Singapore office opened in 1997.

It was there that she met her future husband, Jason Sparks, an American computer scientist based in Asia. After a brief stay in Montreal, the couple settled in Colorado because of the quality of life there.

“We ride our bikes in the sun almost all year round and we can ski in the Rockies less than 90 minutes from our house,” summarizes the mother of two teenage girls.

The state has voted Democratic since 2008.

“But all the states around us are Republican,” specifies Annick Nadeau, who cannot imagine a victory for Donald Trump, even if the Democrats risk hurting the wallets of the wealthy class.

“We expect significant tax increases.”
