Hollywood, Taylor Swift with her cats or even Charli XCX, new pop icon at the origin of the trend brat summer : many celebrities openly support Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
But with Donald Trump, it's a different story. Not a week goes by without a musician threatening to take legal action over the use of his songs by the billionaire's campaign teams.
In recent days, rapper 50 Cent said in the podcast “The Breakfast Club” that the former US president asked him to perform at the recent controversial rally at Madison Square Gardens, for a fee of 3 million dollars (2.8 million euros).
The rapper from New York also reportedly turned down the offer to play his song “Many Men (Wish Death)” at the Republican National Convention (RNC) earlier this year for a similar sum. This 2003 song is known for its music video which refers to the May 24, 2000 shooting of 50 Cent.
Since Trump's assassination attempt in Pennsylvania this year, the song has gained popularity and altered versions of the original cover featuring the Republican candidate's face have circulated widely on social media.
However, before his political career, Trump was rather appreciated by the hip-hop scene. His image as a capitalist hustler has been used in songs by artists such as Rick Ross, Nas, Lil Wayne and Mac Miller. But since his previous campaign in 2016 and his multiple trials, support has become rarer.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of some celebrities who have put their reputation at the service of the Republican candidate.
Anuel AA, Justin Quiles and Nicky Jam
In recent months, Donald Trump has coveted voters from Latin America and did so by receiving public support from three Puerto Rican musicians. Anuel AA and Justin Quiles joined Trump on stage at a rally in Pennsylvania in August.
Both praised Mr. Trump, Anuel even claimed that Joe Biden had made a lot of promises to Puerto Ricans, but had not kept them. Likewise, Nicky Jam joined Trump on stage in Las Vegas to support him in September.
But after the controversial comments of comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who described Puerto Rico as“floating garbage island in the middle of the ocean” at the rally at Madison Square Garden, Nicky Jam rescinded his support for the ex-president on Wednesday.
Buzz Aldrin
Second man on the moon, Buzz Aldrin announced that he had voted for Trump earlier this week. The 94-year-old astronaut clarified that “Under President Trump’s first term, America has seen a revitalized interest in space.”
Elon Musk
Still in the field of space exploration, one of the most important celebrities to support Trump is the one who has the most to gain from his presidency: SpaceX founder Elon Musk did not hesitate to support the candidate Republican, participating in numerous rallies in recent weeks, and saying that if Trump lost, he would be sent to prison.
Musk used X to promote Trump and certain conspiracy theories, such as that of “stolen ballot” of the presidential election in 2020 – whether to improve its waning social network or to obtain government contracts with its numerous companies.
Kanye West
As if this list wasn't already crazy enough, Kanye 'Ye' West is voting for Trump. Long-standing support, even if the rapper has not renewed his support for the MAGA candidate since February. “Yes, of course I will vote for him. It's Donald Trump every day“, he had said.
Jim Caviezel et Mel Gibson
The main actor and director of the film “The Passion of the Christ” became personas non grata following Mel Gibson's anti-Semitic rants to the police and Jim Caviezel's slide into QAnon conspiracy theories. Both voted for Donald Trump, and are also supporting him this year.
According to Mel Gibson, Kamala Harris has the “IQ of a fence post” and will have a balance sheet “miserable” et “terrible” if she becomes president, he said recently in a video broadcast by the TMZ site.
Jake Paul
YouTuber and professional boxer Jake Paul published an 18-minute video on Thursday evening in which he declared his support for Donald Trump.
Hulk Hogan, Mike Tyson et l’Undertaker
Here we come to the segment of the list devoted to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Trump has long been a fan of WWE, and hosted the WrestleMania event at his hotels in the 1980s. Both Hulk Hogan and the Undertaker supported the doomed candidate. Hogan appeared at the RNC, while Trump recently appeared on The Undertaker's podcast. Former boxer Mike Tyson also expressed his support for the Republican candidate.
British celebrities in decline
While the United Kingdom loves to promote its special relationship with the United States, some of its celebrities have made it clear that they would like Americans to vote for the Republican candidate. These include comedian Russell Brand after a series of sexual assault allegations, disgraced former prime ministers Liz Truss and Boris Johnson, and Brexit architect Nigel Farage.
Kid Rock, Billy Ray Cyrus et Jason Aldean
Unsurprisingly for those who have been paying attention, Kid Rock has regularly appeared at Trump rallies, while Jason Aldean, the musician from “Try That in a Small Town”dedicated songs to the presidential candidate during his own concerts.
Musician Billy Ray Cyrus, father of Miley Cyrus, was present at a Donald Trump rally in July and also sang at the funeral of Corey Comperatore, a spectator who died this summer during the assassination attempt on the former president.
Joe Exotic
You remember “Tiger King” ? The hit Netflix series, which captured our attention at the start of the pandemic, immersed us in the world of Joe Exotic, a 61-year-old animal sanctuary owner who is currently serving a sentence of more than 20 years in prison for cruelty to animals and attempted murder on command. He made his presidential preferences known after suspending his own presidential campaign as a Democrat. From FMC Fort Worth prison, Exotic tweeted his support for Donald Trump.
