“Breton music is stylish”: young people also love Celtic culture

“Has been Breton music? No way ! “. With a flip of the sleeve preceded by a shrug of the shoulders, Brewal Féchant dismisses our question, admittedly a little naive. At 17 years old, this Pontivyen ensures that Celtic culture is anything but old-fashioned. Crossing ages and borders, it is even attracting more and more teenagers. The proof, this member of the Kerlenn Pondi, an association which this year has never attracted so many young members, is a bit of the star of his class, at the Marie-Le Franc high school, where he studies in the field of health and social.

« Respect ! »

“Of course, there are still some clichés around Breton music,” agrees the percussionist. Some people think it’s mostly old people’s music, but those who open up a little have a very different vision.” Lively and festive, the blowing of the bagpipes resonates cheerfully to the ears of the teenagers. “Classmates came to see me this summer, during the Bagad Jeunes, organized by Sonerion, at the Lorient Interceltic Festival, and several said “respect” to me! They really liked it and think that Breton music is stylish.”

At the age of 4, they put drumsticks in my hands and I quickly became a percussionist

A podium for Brewal?

Breton music, Brewal was born into it. “My father played the bagpipes and my mother was a circle dancer, so I grew up in that environment, I was always at rehearsals, even as a baby. Besides, at the age of 4, they put drumsticks in my hands and I quickly became a percussionist,” recalls the musician who had the idea very early on. “One day, when I was 6, I went to the batsmen’s final with them. On stage, there was Iwan Audran, seeing him play I said to my father “I want to do that””, smiles Brewal, present on stage during the Gouéliou, Kerlenn festivities on November 8, 9 and 10 , during the final of the Sonerion championship for solo drummers. With a very specific objective: “Last year, I failed, I finished fourth so this year, I am aiming for the podium”. With elders in the room. But also lots of young people.
