The singer was born extremely premature and it was the months spent in an incubator that took away his sight. However, he never harbored resentment, believing that the care received at the time saved his life, as he tells it in “50 minutes inside”.

This eternal optimist who has always honored the joy of living is Isabelle Ithurburu's guest in “50 minutes inside”. The opportunity for the singer to talk about his disability, far from the prejudices of sighted people.
“You have to believe in the possible. For me, being blind has never been a problem. I like my way of seeing, it’s different from yours”assures Gilbert Montagné. Born extremely premature in December 1951, at only 5 and a half months, the family doctor did not believe in his survival. “It will go out like a little candle”he would have declared to his parents. He is sent to Port Royal, but the oxygen pushed too hard in the incubator by the doctors burns his optic nerve. “If they had given me a little less maybe I wouldn’t be here”puts the singer into perspective who believes that “all this was planned”.

“Everything I’m experiencing is extraordinary. There is nothing dramatic. I would like to see the eyes of my wife and my grandchildren,” he concedes, however. “You are so addicted to eyes, you sighted people. It's really abstract to me. It seems good to me to see how it feels, but it doesn't stop me from sleeping.”continues Gilbert Montagné. “You don’t need your eyes to be loved. We need a clear, healthy mind and a beating heart.he concludes.
A committed singer
“If I hadn't been blind, I would have been like everyone else. I would not be aware of everything we can do to improve the lives of people with disabilities”then confides Gilbert Montagné who judges that France is behind on the subject: “Wake up, it’s 2024 in a developed country”.
He takes the example of metro stations which for the most part are still not vocalized. “I wish we were all included in the program. It's like we haven't been thought of and that's why things are so slow. We want to be in the world with you”.
