the infamous Menendez brothers' house becomes a tourist attraction

Erik and Lyle Menendez were sentenced in 1996 to life in prison for the murder of their parents. The story was made famous by a Netflix series released on September 19.

, Dubrobnik, Romania…and now a house in Beverly Hills in Los Angeles. These destinations all have one thing in common: they are popular thanks to the popularity of a series. Some want to see the city in which Emily (in Paris) goes, others, to visit the capital of Westeros (in Game of Thrones), or the landscapes of the series Wednesday . Now, the new tourist attraction is the former mansion of the Menendez Brothers, the house in which Eric and Lyle Menendez, aged 19 and 21 at the time, murdered their relative in 1989, says the Los Angeles Times . This story was made famous by the hit Netflix series: Monsters: the story of Lyle and Erik Menendez, available since September 19.

The story of the two brothers, sentenced to life in prison in 1996, fascinated crime fans. So much so that the craze has swept into a usually quiet neighborhood of Beverly Hills. “There are people all hours of the night”explains a resident of the street to the newspaper. “They get out of their cars and block our driveways”she adds. In total, police officers responded to 18 calls for nighttime disturbances.

Before the success of the series, only a tourist bus passed by, but without other visitors. The resident in question did not even know the history of this house. Since then, the place has become a real gold mine for content creators, especially on TikTok. One video has even been viewed more than 2 million times. The author posted zoomed-in images of the house to hopefully get a glimpse inside.

“It’s fascinating”

“In Italy, the series is very popular”indicates a fan of criminal stories at Los Angeles Times. “It’s fascinating to visit this place”he says. But if for some, their visit is just curiosity, for others, it is melancholy, like this woman who knew one of the two brothers. “I feel a very big presence here”she explains before adding: “the street seems sinister”.

For her as for other fans, the series was an opportunity to become attached and even to understand the motivations of the killers. “I understand what they went through, because I grew up in this town, I had a father similar to theirs. But the abuse they suffered was much worse than mine.indicates this woman.

On August 20, 1989, Lyle and Erik Menendez shot their relative to death. If investigators suggest a perfect and premeditated crime, the reality is much darker. As noted in the series, both brothers were allegedly raped by their father, but this information was sidelined during the highly publicized trial. However, the success of the series made it possible to resume the case and prosecutor George Gascon even announced, on October 25, that he had made a request to review their conviction.
