Immerse yourself in musical autumn at Club Balattou until November 3!

The Nuits d’Afrique acoustic Cabarets program for October promises to be rich and varied with 16 concerts that will transport the public to Morocco, Latin America, West Africa and the West Indies.

For West Africa lovers:
La Kora in all its forms with Zal Sissokho and Diely Mori Tounkara will take place on October 24, promising a timeless moment that will immerse the public in the heart of West Africa. As a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (balafon, kambélé n’goni, taman, calabash, djembé, doum-doum and other percussions), LASSO & SINI-KAN master with disconcerting virtuosity the “speaking flute”, a small transverse reed flute with a captivating sound to be discovered on October 18. After becoming the star of the dance floors with his hit “Denke Denke” sung in his native language, Fulfulde, Dicko Fils became a subscriber to international festivals. The artist with a theatrical imagination collaborates in the creation of stage worlds including the masterpiece Antigone, inspired by the figure of Mandela. The New York capital and the City of Lights open their arms to this Burkinabé Ambassador of Peace who will perform on October 31.

Three winners of the Syli d’Or to (re)discover:
Boulila, a unique fusion of the African Gnawa tradition with jazz, blues, funk, afrobeat, began in 2016 under the direction of Yassine Boudouch. The group then evolved into a fusion outfit in 2019, collaborating with artists such as WuSen Fam, Maroccouleurs, and Kais. The breakthrough materialized with the first prize at the Syli D’or 2021 springboard, to be discovered on October 11. Generously, BABA MD, winner of the Syli d’or 2019 who will play on October 25, spreads West African traditions throughout the world by sowing the notes of his Mandingo Blues pollinated with Jazz, Funk, Rock and Reggae. Silver Syli 2024, with his rhythms from the Berber nomads of the central Sahara, Boubé will offer on November 2 “what no other Montrealer on the music scene offers: authentic desert blues” (Le Devoir, 2024).

Discovering the Antilles:
Sailing between French, Creole and English, Ketsmy’s songs with poignant lyrics denounce the social injustice afflicting racialized people through his protesting lyrics. All delivered with an incomparable soulful voice, supported by percussive and gripping rhythms, not to be missed on October 17. Jab Djab’s music cavorts from one Caribbean island to another, with a touch of American pop. Like the jab, a teasing devil, a carnival character from the Caribbean, they are public entertainers. An always energetic and colorful sound based on reggae, soca, calypso, zouk which will make Balattou dance on October 19. Modeline Raymond immediately charms with her languorous Kompa and Afro-pop rhythms, interspersed with Latin Soul. She exudes energy and passion, putting her sensual voice and confident dynamism to pieces sung in Creole and celebrating love. Which does not prevent her (on the contrary!) from demanding the rights of women to exist fully, to realize themselves and to take their place, which she will do on October 20.

Travel to Latin America:
A - revelation, Mateo mixes his Latin origins with a blast of electric guitar. His music, nourished by his high-pitched voice and his inspired riffs, expresses the multiple facets of his personality. Like no other, Mateo’s production will blow a wind of freedom on October 10. The sharp brass, intense percussion and contagious good humor of Septeto from Montreal, under the musical direction of Julio de Armas, inevitably make you want to dance and have fun, to let everything else go. This group promises to ignite the scene on October 12. Authentic and warm, with a repertoire composed of classics, traditional songs and original compositions, Samba Canjerê, which will play on October 13, celebrates the Afro-Brazilian ancestry of this little gem of rhythm where percussion is king and which embodies among all the joy of living. Athenea Y Su Candela’s proposal is far from sad! Intensified by a flamboyant stage presence, its mix of Latin music from the 70s and pop influences, Cuban rhythms and Mexican harmonies, is an invitation to celebrate and dance at Balattou on November 1st.

Every week, from Thursday to Sunday, at Club Balattou in Montreal, let yourself be carried away by talented artists and unique musical discoveries.
