Lady Gaga: her real estate portfolio from the “gypsy palace” to the penthouse

Despite her eclectic outfits and escapades, Lady Gaga describes herself as a homebody. But where does she live? Today, the « Mother Monster » lives primarily in Malibu, which she affectionately calls her « palais gitan ». Lately, the singer and actress is often away from home, notably to play Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix in Joker: Folie à Deuxas well as for the surprise release of its companion album, Harlequina week before the film’s release. These two projects propel her into a frenzied media tour, so much so that, when she manages to find a rare moment of respite, she favors the comfort of her home.

The star of House of Gucci also praised the benefits of a peaceful domestic life in an article in Vogue in September 2018, calling his Malibu mansion a real “sanctuary”. Over the years, she has owned or rented several properties in Southern California and New York, her hometown. However, she now prefers the tranquility of the West Coast to the hustle and bustle of the East Coast. “I just got rid of my apartment in New York – the street was too busy every day”she said, adding that the calmer pace of Los Angeles allows her to concentrate “on what really matters”. She also admits to approaching this new phase of her life “with a touch of nervousness, but also joy”. Here’s an overview of the places Lady Gaga likes to retreat to when she feels the need to recharge her batteries.

The Lower East Side Apartment

Three years before becoming famous with the release of The Fame In 2008, Lady Gaga was just another musician trying to make a name for herself in New York. She rented a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, where she reportedly wrote much of her debut album. During an interview for the show 60 Minutes in 2011, she gave journalist Anderson Cooper a tour of the pre-war building, but was unable to show her old apartment because the current tenant did not want to welcome cameras.

In March 2021, another apartment in the same building was put up for rent for 1,850 euros per month, giving fans a glimpse into Lady Gaga’s life before fame. This charming accommodation featured wooden floors, 3 meter high ceilings, two large windows in the bedroom and French doors which separated the bedroom from the living room. The unit where the star lived had previously been put on the market in 2011 and 2015, according to People.

Rental of Bel Air

In 2009, after the success of The FameLady Gaga rented a six-bedroom, eight-bathroom residence in Bel Air for around 23,000 euros per month. Images of the property show a Mediterranean-style abode, hidden behind paparazzi-proof security gates, with a double-height foyer for a dramatic entrance. Wrought iron grilles and crystal chandeliers accentuate the luxury of the interior, while a large swimming pool out back offers stunning views of the city. It is unknown how long the star resided in this Bel Air house, but it is certain that she found an oasis of relative calm there, amid the media whirlwind that surrounded her at the time.

As Lady Gaga continued her meteoric rise, in 2013 she began renting a penthouse for 20,200 euros per month, located south of Central Park. This 2,000-square-foot duplex was in a building popular with celebrities, where Lance Armstrong and Liza Minnelli were reportedly tenants, thanks in large part to the privacy it offered. The announcement also specified that there was no “no neighbors on one side or the other”. Lady Gaga’s apartment included four terraces, two wood-burning fireplaces, a spacious dressing room and a grand staircase worthy of Hollywood films. True to her style, the singer left a creative mark by decorating the apartment with Hinson wallpaper, famous for its leafy patterns associated with the Beverly Hills Hotel, as well as pink mirrors. Fans can also see his old apartment in the Netflix documentary Gaga: Five Foot Tworeleased in 2017.
