Les Misérables, the legendary musical comedy arrives in Geneva

Les Misérables, the legendary musical comedy arrives in Geneva in its English version, for the first time. It’s an XXL show that will be at the Arena from October 30 to November 3.

“It’s a real event.” This is how Vincent Sager, director of Opus One, sums up the arrival of Les Misérables in Geneva. He notes that this will be the first time that the musical comes to French-speaking Switzerland in its English version, its best-known variant.

Since its revival in 1985 in London, the musical comedy with a French plot written by Victor Hugo has been a thunderous success. “It has become the English’s favorite musical. Everyone has always been singing “let the people sing” in London in the theater aisles,” notes Vincent Sager. After almost 40 years of life for this British version of Les Misérables, success is still there: “It almost has the value of a national anthem for the United Kingdom, it’s spectacular”, summarizes the director of Opus One . To live up to the event, the Geneva Arena will be transformed accordingly.

Large evenings of this type are becoming increasingly rare in Switzerland. Is there still hope of setting up large bastringues at the end of the lake? “We can still do big things. But the world has globalized, competition is keen with London, Madrid or Barcelona which have spectacular infrastructures, it is not just in the interest or not of playing in Geneva that it is played out, it is broader than that,” analyzes Vincent Sager.

The Titanic docks in Lausanne

Other news from Opus One’s programming, “Titanic – The Exhibition, real objects, real stories” runs until January 26 in Lausanne at Beaulieu. It is aimed at all audiences, young and old.

A true journey through time, the exhibition begins with the construction of the ship, retraces life on board and recounts its sinking as well as the efforts to locate the wreck and recover objects from the site where the Titanic rests.

Visitors will discover a model of the ship, objects recovered at a depth of more than 3,800 meters, stories from crew members and passengers, anecdotes and video projections.
