The route highlights topics that are still current, with intense focuses on the Manhattan Project (creation of the A bomb), Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Fukushima…

Contemporary resonances

The exhibition gives a voice to artists. It presents works by many influential 20th century and contemporary artists ranging from aesthetic fascination to criticism of the “spectacularization” of explosions, including cries of warning against nuclear power in all its forms.

It is impossible not to think of the current threats from certain leaders regarding the use of atomic weapons, particularly in Ukraine. And then, resonance too, with the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the Japanese group survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, anti-nuclear Nihon Hidankyo.

Artists as spokespersons

The visitor is quickly captivated by the works of Kandinsky, Pollock, Duchamp, Bacon, and Dalí, Le Corbusier which show how art was influenced by this invention and its use.

Contemporary artists like Luc Tuymans, Atsuko Tanaka, Yayoi Kusama, Jim Shaw and many others continue this work between fascination, denunciation and rejection.
Each reflects the richness and diversity of artistic reactions to scientific advances and societal issues linked to the atom.
