3 alternative and free fairs to visit alongside Art Basel

If you find Art Basel too expensive or the 195 galleries exhibited at the Grand Palais for the fair were not enough for you, Art Week continues elsewhere and on view, in completely crazy places that are worth the detour to them alone. On the map this year? A huge abandoned telephone exchange, a brutalist garage and a former Baccarat factory. Or thousands of square meters of contemporary works from all over the world, to be browsed between October 16 and 20. Here are three alternative fairs to see first.

Paris International

One of our favorite events during Art Week. Widely open to the world, with 19 countries represented this year, this fair has represented the underground (but thunderous) side of Art Basel Paris (formerly FIAC) for ten years now. Like last year, this edition takes place across the floors of a former telephone exchange, a stone’s throw from the Grands Boulevards.

Or ? 17 rue du Faubourg-Poissonnière, Paris 9th.
When ? from October 16 to 20.
How much ? free, by reservation.

The Salon

A new kid on the Parisian contemporary radar, The Salon stands out as the cool kid of this selection. At the initiative of two artistic associations (the New York New Art Dealers Alliance and the Parisian The Community), the event cultivates the transatlantic avant-garde and highlights emerging artists in the heart of a former crystal factory. of Baccarat (in the 10th arrondissement). On Saturday October 19, a book fair will bring together booksellers and publishers at the heart of the fair.

Or ? 30 bis rue de Paradis, Paris 10th.
When ? from October 17 to 20.
How much ? free, by reservation.

OFFSCREEN

While an exhibition is dedicated to her at the Jeu de Paume, Belgian director Chantal Akerman is the guest of honor at OFFSCREEN, the still and moving image fair. You will discover in particular his video installation The Roomtaken from his eponymous film (1972). Alongside him, around twenty artists (photographers, directors, visual artists) from around the world are invited to present their works in the brutalist and unusual space of the former Garage Haussmann. A bookstore area also awaits you, designed in collaboration with the New York art bookstore Printed Matter.

Or ? 43 rue de Laborde, Paris 8th.
When ? from October 16 to 20.
How much ? free, by reservation.

Do you want more? This way for the design fairs!
