11th edition of the “Monde en Vues” Festival in Guadeloupe: A program that celebrates the ability to reinvent themselves of the people of the Caribbean and its diaspora

The cinematographic and audiovisual creation sector still remains the poor relation of culture in the overseas territories and there are many associations and players in this sector who are fighting to allow it to exist and develop. This is evidenced by the proliferation of festivals which contribute to this desire to give voice to a sector which aims to be creative, militant and resistant.

This is the case of the International Human Rights Film Festival “World in Views” of Guadeloupe which, since its creation more than ten years ago, has been part of this dynamic, at the initiative of the Alliance Ciné Caraibes association. The Festival “ World in Views » is indeed “ a space where the image becomes a living memory, where fiction rubs shoulders with reality to deconstruct and recompose », Says its artistic director, Elisabeth Gustave.

« Place of affirmation of identities, struggles and histories in movement » as the patron saint of this festival implies, “ World in Views » is characterized by its desire to open a window on the world and on the issues linked to migration, the struggles of women, the ravages of colonization and even social struggles. Because cinema is the ideal vector for “reach as many people as possible, raise awareness of the issues facing our world, convey values ​​of solidarity and humanity and enable exchanges beyond borders », As assured by Guy Losbar, president of the Departmental Council of Guadeloupe.

Placed under the theme of “plural identities, cultural intersections », this 11th edition of the Festival « World in Views » will open with a tribute to the Guadeloupean author Simone Schwarz-Bart, godmother of this edition, and will honor creators who question the memories and resistance of Caribbean societies. It is in this sense that this 2024 edition offers a program that celebrates “ the courage, creativity and ability to reinvent themselves of the people of the Caribbean and its diaspora » with 32 films – long and short films – which will deal with issues of cultural, political and identity resistance in the Caribbean and its diasporas and will be screened in different cultural venues including the ACTe Memorial in Pointe-à-Pitre, the Departmental Residence (), Cinéma D’Arbaud (Basse-Terre), Le Multiplex Cinestar (), Ernest J. Pépin Media Library (Lamentin) and Musarth (Pointe-à-Pitre).

Around forty speakers present

Films which will be in competition in four categories, including the Alliance Caribbean Grand Prix (jury chaired by Martinican journalist, producer and director Harry Roselmack), the Air Caribbean Fiction Prize with a jury including Martinican director Gilles Elie- said-Cosaque, the Human Rights League Prize with a jury including the academic and cinema specialist Guillaume Robillard and finally the “ World in Views » in the walls with Cinémawon and a jury made up of inmates from the Fond Sérail penitentiary center in Baie-Mahault.

In total, around forty speakers (actors, directors, producers, intellectual personalities, actors in the cinematographic and audiovisual sector, etc.) will be present at this festival, which is intended as a space for exchange and creation where art and cinema, literature and critical thinking. Thus, feminist struggles, masculinity, decolonization, shared memories, so many themes which will be at the heart of this 11th festival to nourish diasporic conversations and exchanges likely to provoke collective reflections which shape the thoughts of tomorrow.

Brief, ” World in Views » 2024 is a call to “to watch, to listen, to debate, to vibrate” with the added bonus of the possibility of making great film discoveries and enriching intellectual encounters around this vast mosaic that is the Caribbean.
