MUSIC – Vinz, Saïd and Hubert make their return, but with music. This Thursday, October 10, the three strong heads of Hate arrive at the Seine Musicale, near , for the premiere of a long series of dates as part of the musical comedy adaptation of the cult feature film, César for best film in 1996.

To dress Hate, so far nothing has changedthe composer Proof has designed an original soundtrack which brings together around twenty artists, including several generations of rappers from Akhenaten to Jyeuhair, but also names in French song, such as M and Clara Luciani, or the DJ duo The Blaze.

The twelve scenes in the show, which are inspired by the film by Mathieu Kassovitz released in 1995, are accompanied by music “in the service of the story”the person in charge of the musical direction here told AFP. Proof thus composed the soundtrack for ” most “ of the twelve titles which correspond to these paintings, then submitted to the creative universes of around twenty artists.

Rap, still marginalized in the 1990s and which is now at the top of streaming platforms in , takes the lion’s share in this playlist. At the time of the film, “this whole hip-hop culture was emerging”recalls the producer, originally from a working-class neighborhood of . Today, “this music influences everywhere”.

M, The Blaze…

Here he brings together rap figures like Akhenaton (IAM), Tunisiano (Sniper), Oxmo Puccino and Youssoupha, alongside the younger generation, from Jyeuhair to Youssef Swatt’s (both discovered in New school) in a duet with the current variety star: Clara Luciani.

In other registers, also appear M (Matthieu Chedid), the Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo, the pianist Sofiane Pamart and the electro music duo The Blaze. The credits of the film, Burnin’ and Lootin’ by Bob Marley and The Wailers, was also covered and remixed by DJ Mercer.

“I wanted to have a panel to show the diversity and richness of this music”adds the composer, specifying that electro or pop tones are also injected, or even for certain pieces, symphonic arrangements with violins and choirs.

Which should not, however, distort the main subject of the story, identical to that of the 1995 film: police violence. “ Musicals are extremely political », according to Mathieu Kassovitz, in an interview given to France Inter last September. The director cites among other things West Side Story, Starmania et Hair, all of the “ political firebrands ».

« We are not just here to continue to bring to life a film that is part of our culture », Adds the latter to the microphone of Sonia Devillers. Before adding: “ There are still police blunders. » So far nothing has changed, except the soundtrack.
