Quality of care “compromised”: Quebec hospitals on a tightrope

Many hospitals – whether in centers or in the regions – are close to reaching their breaking point with access to care sometimes deemed “difficult” by the College of Physicians which has carried out a new tour of these establishments.

The observation is unequivocal according to the organization, which notes problems with staff retention, standards applied uniformly which disadvantage remote regions, but also a quality of care which finds itself “compromised”.

In addition to visiting hospitals in Lévis, Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Gaspé, Baie-Comeau and Kuujjuaq, the College of Physicians also visited the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital and the Sainte-CHU CHU. Justine, both in Montreal, where the situation is not rosier.

“The hospital is under enormous pressure, in particular because of its role as a supraregional specialized pediatric center, and the breaking point has been reached,” we read in particular in this report published Monday about the CHU Sainte-Justine.

“Doctors must be better supported to properly care for the Quebec population and assume their social responsibility towards the people in the area they serve,” insisted Dr. Mauril Gaudreault, president of the College of Physicians.

The president of the Physicians Council of the CISSS de la Côte-, Dr. Youssef Ezahr, is in no way surprised by these findings.

“This is the reflection that we have been experiencing since May since we established a wall-to-wall policy for all of Quebec and we find ourselves with the consequences of a fairly significant workforce with a quality care which is less,” he explained in an interview with LCN.

“Thanks to caregivers, we are able to provide an outstanding service, but it is always the caregivers who must be thanked currently, and not what is done in Quebec,” he maintained.

“We are very aware of the issues facing our health and social services system and our staff, which is why we developed the Health Plan,” the Minister of Health, Christian Dubé, reacted on .
