The Rougier & Plé facade by Daniel Buren: “Starting from a triangle, work in situ, 2024”. ROUGIER & PLé

Boulevard des Filles-du-Calvaire in the heart of the Marais in , the historic brand Rougier & Plé, dedicated to fine arts and creative hobbies, is now unveiling a new facade. Facade which was created by the painter, sculptor and visual artist Daniel Buren. Certainly, as a recent article in “M, Magazine du Monde” points out, “We had to adjust the diaries and go through a few confinements but, seven years and a little daring later, the banal storefront of Rougier & Plé has changed dimension.” Also, before starting the work, the architects of the buildings of were called in because the building had to be restored to its original state.

For his project, Daniel Buren played both on economy of means and on the relationships between the substance and the form of this four-story building extending over 1,000 square meters on four levels. The windows were covered with opaque filters in red, yellow or blue colors during the day, and transparent and bright at night. On the street side, continues the article from “M, le Magazine du Monde”, “the exterior wall was refreshed with a coat of off-white. Then streaked with hand-painted black bands ». To ensure that these fell perfectly straight, they were traced using a sewing thread.

These 8.7 cm wide vertical strips are harmoniously juxtaposed alongside the colored windows to be in harmony with the building. Daniel Buren, highlights the article in “M, Le Magazine du Monde”, “juggled with primary colors and sharp geometric figures to emphasize, erase and animate certain contours. » And continue : “The result is clean and without burrs. Not a millimeter more, not a millimeter less. Like those which adorn the 260 columns placed in the main courtyard of the Palais-Royal. »

Entirely financed by Rougier & Plé, the artist’s work is completely in keeping with the architectural evolution of the place while preserving its authenticity. The decor also refers to the monument located in front of the store, the Cirque d’hiver for the shapes and colors of the facade. “ For Daniel Buren, specifies the article of “M the Magazine of the World”stripes are just a tool that allows you to interact with a place. To magnify it and make it rediscovered. »

The interior of the store has also undergone work on the ground floor. The flooring and lighting were changed and the ceiling was renovated. Work is expected to continue on the upper floors in 2025 and will include flooring, painting, lighting and level fittings.
