PEOPLE – She will never dance with him again. American singer Madonna paid a long and poignant tribute to her brother Christopher Ciccone this Sunday, October 6 on her Instagram account. He died Friday at age 63 from cancer.

“My brother Christopher is gone. He was the closest human being to me for so long. It’s hard to explain our bond. But it came from an understanding that we were different and that society was going to give us a hard time for not following the status quo.”begins the 66-year-old popstar. Her publication is embellished with numerous photos of her with her little brother.

Madonna then explains how dancing was their shared passion. It was initially as a dancer, and not as a singer, that the star dreamed of making a career. “Dancing was a kind of superglue that held us together. Discovering dance in our small Midwestern town saved me, and then my brother came along, and it saved him too.”she explains.

She also remembers the “ballet teacher also named Christopher who created a safe space for (his) brother to be gay. A word that has never been spoken or even whispered” in BayCity, where they lived. The siblings are in fact from this small town in Michigan, a state located in the RustBelt (“rust belt”) and traditionally conservative.

Christopher Ciccone has danced in his music videos and directed his tours

Madonna goes on to recount their departure for New York and how they ” dance “ in the streets of New York, “through the madness of the AIDS epidemic”and through all the trials they were able to go through together. “We danced together on stage early in my career and eventually he became creative director of many of my tours”she says. He was a professional dancer and notably appeared in the music video Lucky star.

Their relationship hasn’t always been easy, and Madonna admits that. Christopher Ciccone had also written a book about his sister and their quarrels, entitled Life with My Sister Madonna. But after moving away, they forgave each other. “When my brother got sick. We found our way to each other. I did my best to keep him alive as long as possible. He was in so much pain towards the end.”she says.

And to conclude: “I’m glad he’s not in pain anymore. There will never be anyone like him. I know he’s dancing somewhere. » This is the second tragedy in a very short time for Madonna, since she lost her mother-in-law Joan Clare Ciccone to cancer at the end of September. At the end of 2023, his other brother Anthony Ciccone also died.
