the final lap of a gem

Sad news for all moviegoers who love strong emotions: Jean-Maurice Bigeard, the creator of L’Absurde Séance, is indeed considering retiring this year. “I have been working in cinemas for 40 years and almost 25 years since I have been trying to defend bis cinema. (genre films shot with reduced means and intended for popular audiences) within the framework of the Absurd. This represents a certain number of hours of viewing »he sums up with a rather nice sense of shorthand.

Karate films, horror films, thrillers, nonsense or forgotten classics

A tireless film hunter, our lover of film curiosities will have in fact more or less spent his life haunting cinemas and specialized festivals in order to unearth, for his regulars, the most baroque pearls. “Karate, horror, thriller, nonsense or forgotten classics… I have always found it annoying to see a whole section of popular cinema ignored or even despised by critics. Making it visible, in a festive atmosphere, has always been my goal since the creation of L’Absurde”. A noble task, we agree, but should we detect in this desire for retirement a sign of weariness? “My cinephilia is still there but 25 years seems a sufficient duration to me. In addition, I won’t hide the fact that I really want the sun. Pleasure that our beautiful city only too rarely offers”.

Crazy cartoons and weird nuggets

But let us be reassured: our potential retiree is not the man to abandon his audience abruptly. The ultimate festival of the Absurd (ASNIFF for short) bears witness to his desire to take leave in style. From October 8 to 13, no less than 20 films, including many new and previews, await the people of Nantes. The very gory The Substance by the French Coralie Forgeat, a drastic rereading of the myth of Faust, or the dizzying Fall will delight fans. Crazy cartoons and Ugandan or Spanish karate films will delight connoisseurs of weirdness.

If this 16th edition of ASNIFF will indeed be the last, on the other hand, the Absurde Séance, which takes place every other Thursday at Katorza, should continue until next April. Each session, always hosted by Jean-Maurice Bigeard, is an opportunity to discover, in a festive atmosphere, a gem, a new release or a preview of genre cinema.

ASNIFF from October 8 to 13 at Katorza (Fantastic night – 4 films and a breakfast – October 12).
