In majesty, “Atala” is exhibited at the Chateaubriand house

REPORTAGE – Until September 2025, the Maison de Chateaubriand invites the reader to travel to the heart of this flagship novel of the 19th century. An unprecedented immersion as more than a hundred pieces devoted to this work published in 1801 are brought together for the first time.

It’s a pink brick house hidden among wood-covered hills. You get there via a small white gravel path. It was cold that day. Autumn spreads out at our feet. Chestnuts that have fallen from their branches roll onto the road. You have to hurry to avoid getting one on the head. So we walk quickly, our foreheads turned towards the green sky. A delicate, sweet scent of cyclamen rises in the humid air. A few parakeets pass by without seeing us. “Everything here is movement and murmur.” And then we arrive in front of the “thatched cottage” from Chateaubriand, eight kilometers from , in Vallée-aux-Loups.
